It’s so easy to get down in times like this. While I go to church and serve there, as well, I admittedly don’t read my Bible like I know I should. I really need to improve in this area. Anyhow, when looking for some solace about all of this mess that has been going on lately — not just Irma and the possibility of other storms looming out there, but also deaths and illnesses within my family, unexpected personal financial hardships, and just the general atmosphere of hate and sin that has our nation by the throat — it’s like my pastor said during a sermon recently: it sure seems like the darkness is winning the battle.

YHC needed a word last night. Not just any word, though. I needed a Word word. And I found one in Romans, Chapter 3 that provides comfort to me and I hope it will to each of you:

“We glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope. And hope does not put us to shame because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.”

I guess that’s Paul’s way of telling us to embrace the suck so that we might be a tower of strength and a beacon of hope not only to our loved ones, but also to those around us who can’t manage to do so for themselves. It’s our chance to be the hands and feet of God in the world.

Safe travels to all. See you in the gloom…whenever the gloom is accessible again.
