The Murph

12 pax came together this Memorial Day to commemorate those that have sacrificed their lives in service to our country.   In particular, we do the Murph in honor of Michael Murphy, who courageously – and selflessly – gave up his cover to call in rescue teams for his injured comrades, knowing that it would cost him his life.  He was the first soldier since Vietnam to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

The thang – the official Murph is a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 pushups, 300 squats, another 1 mile run, all wearing a 20 lb vest.

We had a couple guys wear what I assume were 20 lb vests – kudos to Yogibear and Snowball!

We started with a little warmup – SSH, imperial walkers, and weed pickers.

Ran a longer route to the school – ended up being right at 1 mile.k

Knocked out the pull-ups, pushups, and squats. Many, including myself, modified heavily on the pull-ups, at some point switching to hanging rows.

Ran back to Casino Flag.

Naked man moleskin – My friend from college, Tyler Brown, died in combat in Iraq. He was the student body president of Georgia Tech, the social chair of my fraternity, and an Army Ranger. Everyone assumed he would go into politics one day.  He was 26.

I tried to quote a bible verse but ended up combining two – here they are below.  Today is a good time to think not only of the service others have done for us, but also reflect on how we can serve others.

John 15:13 – Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

1 John 3:16 – This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
